Midlands Innovation is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Nishan Canagarajah, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, as the new Chair of its Board of Vice-Chancellors.
He will act as Chair for the collaborative research and innovation partnership until 2027, working closely with board members and the core Midlands Innovation team to provide strategic leadership and direction on collaborative research priorities and opportunities for the region.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time, as Midlands Innovation celebrates its 10th anniversary and accelerates its vision for the next decade. With momentum building around several key initiatives—including the launch of the ambitious Forging Ahead programme—the partnership is positioning the Midlands at the heart of national conversations on innovation and growth.
Professor Canagarajah succeeds Professor Dame Karen Holford, whose tenure saw the partnership strengthen its strategic priorities and expand its influence across the UK’s research and innovation landscape. As Midlands Innovation enters its second decade, Professor Canagarajah brings a renewed focus on growth, collaboration, and innovation-led impact.
“It is a privilege to take on this role as Midlands Innovation marks its 10th anniversary,” said Professor Canagarajah. “This partnership has demonstrated the power of collective ambition, and with Forging Ahead, we are setting the stage for the next generation of innovation, enterprise, and regional transformation.”
Dr Helen Turner, Director of Midlands Innovation, welcomed the appointment:
“Thank you to Professor Dame Karen Holford for acting as the Chair of the Board for the last two years. During that time we have strengthened our regional and national influence, championed international investment into Midlands R&D, and laid the groundwork for transformational initiatives like Forging Ahead.”
“Professor Canagarajah’s leadership and vision are perfectly aligned with our ambitions for the future. As we celebrate ten years of impact, his appointment signals a new era of opportunity for our universities, our region, and the UK’s innovation economy.
I very much look forward to working with Nishan, as the new Chair, the wider Board and the Executive Management Group to build on the impressive achievements of our partnership to date.”
With a track record of championing research talent and regional development, Professor Canagarajah is well-positioned to guide Midlands Innovation through its next phase—one that promises to be dynamic, inclusive, and impactful.”
