Professor Leon Terry named as new EMG Chair

Midlands Innovation is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Leon Terry, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Cranfield University, as the new Chair of its Executive Management Group (EMG).

The Executive Management Group—comprising the Pro-Vice-Chancellors of Research from each of the eight academic partner institutions—plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the Midlands Innovation partnership, working closely with the MI Board of Vice-Chancellors to advance collaborative research and innovation across the region.

Professor Terry brings a wealth of experience in strategic research leadership and applied innovation to the role. His appointment comes at a time of significant momentum and opportunity for the partnership. Reflecting on his new role, Professor Terry said:

“Having served as a member of the Executive Management Group for several years, I’m pleased to step into the role of Chair and help lead our collaboration into its next chapter. I’d like to thank Professor Phil Baker for his outstanding leadership over the past two years—his guidance has been instrumental in driving the partnership forward.

As we look ahead, there’s a real opportunity to build on that progress. Now more than ever, we must harness the collective strengths of our eight universities to deliver high-impact initiatives that benefit our members, the region, and the UK as a whole.”

Under Professor Terry’s two-year tenure, Midlands Innovation will continue to champion key strategic programmes, including the groundbreaking Forging Ahead initiative, which is set to transform how research and innovation are translated into real-world impact across the region. Alongside Invest in UK University R&D Campaign and Midlands Mindforge, these initiatives are positioning the Midlands as a national hub for innovation, investment, talent, and enterprise.

Looking ahead, Professor Terry signals exciting new initiatives on the horizon that will further elevate the Midlands as a vocal and influential region in shaping the UK’s growth agenda.

“Ten years into our partnership, we are continually breaking new ground—building a shared research culture, harnessing emerging technologies, and maximising opportunities for our members. We will continue to focus on strengthening the regional innovation ecosystem and unlocking new opportunities.”

Commenting on the appointment, MI Director Dr Helen Turner said:“I am looking forward to working with Professor Terry in his new capacity as Chair of the Midlands Innovation Executive Management Group.

I would also like to thank Professor Phil Baker for his tireless work over the past two years. Under his leadership, Midlands Innovation has launched initiatives that are driving the Midlands research ecosystem forward and supporting the UK’s ambitions for regional growth, innovation-led development, and global competitiveness.

Having been a key member of the EMG throughout this time, Professor Terry is well placed to build on this momentum.”
