Midlands Innovation partners evidence research excellence in REF 2021

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) results which assess and benchmark the quality of the UK’s higher education research impact and outputs have been published.

Since forming a research partnership in 2015, the eight research-intensive universities within Midlands Innovation have established a strong track record collaborating on research within engineering, energy, life sciences, med-tech and space.

The REF 2021 results reveal that collectively, Midlands Innovation has a total staffing volume of more than 7194 academics driving research output, evidenced through 592 impact case studies.

Dr Helen Turner, Director of Midlands Innovation said: “Congratulations to all eight institutions for the REF results they have achieved which demonstrate the quality of research taking place across the partnership.

“As the national tool used to evaluate the value of research delivered by universities, we welcome the REF findings and will continue to collaborate with our partners to further strengthen the Midlands research output, impact and environment to create clusters of excellence in areas we know we excel in.

“We are committed to working with our partners to develop a world-class, thriving and responsive research base and the REF results will enable us to do so.”
