MI launches Once in a Lifetime Parliamentary Fellowships

Midlands Innovation is proud to announce two exclusive new fellowship opportunities.

Midlands Innovation is thrilled to be partnering with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) to offer two fellowship opportunities in social sciences and biological health.

PhD level students at one of seven participating MI universities now have the chance to apply for this once in a lifetime opportunity to experience first-hand working in Parliament. Successful fellows will be able to interact closely with people and activities in the two Houses of Parliament, including; Select Committees, MPs and Peers, their support services, ‘All-Party Parliamentary Group’ meetings and more.

The 13-week fellowship opportunity, which will take place from April 2025, is open to PhD students who are undertaking or have recently completed their PhD study in the social sciences or in life sciences, health sciences and medicine. The opportunities are for eligible PhD students from; Aston, Cranfield, Keele, and Loughborough University and the Universities of Birmingham, Leicester and Warwick.

The successful fellows will support UK Parliament’s use of research evidence. Most fellows assist POST in providing briefing material for parliamentarians on emerging science topics. This can include researching and producing briefings and reports or assisting Select Committees research needs for inquiries.

The MI POST Fellowship will provide successful fellows with the opportunity to learn about the role of the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), which is the research and knowledge exchange service of Parliament.

Professor Phil Baker, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research and Enterprise at the University of Leicester and Chair of the Midlands Innovation Executive Management Group, said: “As a partnership of the top-research intensive universities in the Midlands, we’re thrilled to be offering these two fantastic opportunities for our postgraduate students to undertake a research fellowship in the Houses of Parliament.

“These are once in a lifetime opportunities to undertake research projects on areas of national importance which will help provide parliamentarians with the information they need to make decisions that can impact the whole country.”

Dr Clare Lally, Biological Sciences and Health Lead at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), said: “We’re delighted to be working with the Midlands Innovation partnership to offer these fellowship opportunities. We are looking for students who would like the challenge of diving into a new research area, and are curious to learn how research feeds in to the policymaking decisions that shape society.”
