The Midlands Innovation Electron Microscopy (MI EM) Network Conference 2026, hosted at the University of Warwick, highlighted just how much the network is building momentum. Bringing together researchers, technical experts, and industry partners, the event showcased outstanding electron microscopy (EM) capability across the region and beyond.
The conference opened with introductions to the cutting-edge EM facilities and technologies available at Warwick, setting the tone for a day focused on innovation, collaboration and real-world impact. Presentations throughout the morning demonstrated the breadth of regional facilities, including Nottingham Trent University’s imaging suite, multi-species PFIB applications at Warwick, and novel techniques such as graphene liquid cell TEM analysis at the University of Nottingham. Together, these talks reinforced the Midlands’ reputation for world-class facilities, skilled technical professionals and pioneering research.
Strong collaboration between universities and industry was a clear theme. Industry technobyte sessions and the sponsor exhibition provided valuable updates on the latest instruments that are helping researchers push the boundaries of science.
Afternoon sessions continued with technobytes and also focused on technical career development, showcasing national facilities and the launch of the Midlands Electron Microscopy database. These sessions sparked lively discussion around equipment sharing, national research infrastructure and future directions for EM research.
With excellent facilities, outstanding expertise and strong industry support, the conference once again demonstrated the strength of the MI EM community. The event not only celebrated current innovations but also provided practical insights into how researchers and industry partners can work together to accelerate future discoveries.
The MI EM committee are looking for a volunteer to formally join the group supporting with shaping and signing off network activities and leading the charge on improving communications across the vibrant MI EM research community. If you’d like to take up this fantastic opportunity or get involved in/in touch about the network more generally, please contact group leads Matt Piggott or Emma Hesketh.
