With four investments now announced and more to follow, Midlands Mindforge is beginning to demonstrate the breadth and quality of innovation emerging from across the region. In this guest blog, CEO Dr Lisa Smith reflects on what the fund's early portfolio reveals about the Midlands' research and innovation strengths.
When Midlands Mindforge was established, it set out with a clear ambition: to help more of the Midlands’ outstanding research and innovation become successful, high-growth companies capable of delivering real-world impact.
The Midlands has long been home to world-class research, cutting-edge facilities and exceptional entrepreneurial talent. Yet too often, promising spinouts and science-led businesses have struggled to access the capital, networks and support needed to scale at the pace their innovations deserve.
That is why it has been so exciting to see the first companies joining the Midlands Mindforge portfolio. While these businesses operate in very different sectors, together they tell an important story about the strength, diversity and ambition of the Midlands innovation ecosystem.
Take K-Vector, which is developing advanced antenna technologies with applications in next-generation communications systems. Its work highlights the region’s deep expertise in engineering, advanced materials and areas of technical strategic importance, including resilient communications and defence-related capabilities. It is exactly the kind of globally relevant innovation that has the potential to create high-value jobs and new economic opportunities in the region.
Meanwhile, IMS Solutions is developing breakthrough diagnostics for complex hormone-related conditions, using unique steroid “fingerprint” technology to support earlier, more accurate diagnosis. Its work demonstrates the strength of Midlands research in healthcare innovation and at the intersection of precision medicine and computational modelling, translating world-class science into technologies with the potential to improve outcomes for patients worldwide.
Also in healthcare, Healome is pioneering a novel approach to ocular drug delivery that could transform the way treatments are administered and improve outcomes for patients. It is another example of the Midlands’ long-standing strength in novel materials, this time applied as a medical innovation, demonstrating how world-leading material research can be translated into technologies with the potential to improve lives on a global scale.
TextureJet is pioneering software-defined surface processing, bringing together software, precision hardware and robotics to automate high-value manufacturing operations. Its technology enables precise, repeatable processing of complex components. Developed in the Midlands, TextureJet continues our long heritage of pioneering novel manufacturing solutions.
What excites me most is not simply the quality of these individual companies, but what they collectively represent.
Together, they offer an early glimpse of the breadth and ambition of innovation emerging from our region, and of the potential to build globally competitive businesses around the technologies that will shape the UK’s future economy. They also demonstrate the power of collaboration across universities, investors, technology transfer offices and innovation partners to support founders on their commercialisation journey.
The Midlands already produces an extraordinary concentration of world-leading research. But great research alone is not enough. We must also ensure we invest in great commercialisation, helping brilliant ideas become businesses that create jobs, attract investment and solve real-world problems.
That is why Midlands Mindforge exists.
Importantly, we are building on strong foundations. For more than a decade, Midlands Innovation has demonstrated what can be achieved when universities work together around a shared ambition. That collaborative approach has helped create an environment where innovation can move faster, where expertise can be shared more effectively and where support for founders extends well beyond any single institution.
Our first investments are only the beginning. We continue to see an exceptional pipeline of opportunities emerging from across the Midlands, giving us real confidence in the future.
The Midlands has no shortage of groundbreaking ideas. Our collective challenge now is ensuring those ideas have every opportunity to grow, scaling to solve global issues while generating impact in the region where they were born.
