Initial reaction to the Innovation and R&D People and Culture Strategies

Following the Government publishing the Innovation Strategy and R&D People and Culture Strategy on Thursday 22nd July 2021, Dr Helen Turner, Director of Midlands Innovation said: “We welcome the Government publishing its Innovation and R&D People and Culture Strategies.

“Whilst we look forward to reading the full innovation strategy, we are pleased that the Government has recognised in its announcement the integral role of universities in the UK’s research and innovation landscape, and the key role universities will make in implementing the strategy.”

Of the R&D People and Culture Strategy, Dr Helen Turner, said: “As the partnership that nationally champions the critical role of technicians in academic research, Midlands Innovation was delighted to be able to feed in initial research and findings from its sector-leading TALENT Programme into the development of the strategy.

“Midlands Innovation is currently undertaking the UK’s largest investment in the development of higher education and research technicians through both the TALENT programme, and our policy commission – the UK’s first technician focused policy commission which will address the shortfall of technicians that are so integral in helping to increase R&D investment to 2.4% and in helping the UK to become a science superpower.

“We welcome the appointment of Professor Melanie Welham, Executive Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, as UKRI’s people and culture champion and look forward to briefing her on the ways that the TALENT programme can feed into the delivering of the R&D People and Culture Strategy.”
