Call for workshops for the UK Higher Education Technicians Summit

The UK’s biggest ever conference for technicians in higher education and research will be taking place in Nottingham next year, and the organisers are looking for ideas for workshops.

The UK Higher Education Technicians Summit (HETS) will be held at the East Midlands Conference Centre at the University of Nottingham on Weds 23rd June 2021, and is sponsored by Midlands Innovation in partnership with the Science Council and the Technician Commitment.

The 2021 summit will be the largest event held specifically for UK and Ireland higher education and research technical staff, building on the success of three previous summits held at Birmingham in 2019, Warwick in 2017, and in Nottingham in 2015, with 900 delegates expected to attend.

Contingency plans for a blended approach of online and in person delivery are in place should Coronavirus restrictions still be in place in June 2021.
HETS shares best practice amongst higher education technical staff in the UK, Ireland and beyond. The Summit is structured around a range of “hot topics” that impact the technical community. Previous examples of topics include designing the perfect practical, presentation skills, health and safety, social media, sustainable laboratories and more.

The Organising Committee is inviting proposals for workshops for the 2021 conference. Workshops can be on a diverse range of topics. The goal of the workshops is to provide an informal forum for delegates to discuss current and emerging topics and challenges. Workshops will last for 50 minutes, with morning and afternoon sessions.

Kelly Vere, Chair of HETS said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the fourth UK Higher Education Technician Summit in June 2021. Six years on from our inaugural event, the Summit has gone from strength to strength. HETS provides technical colleagues with an invaluable opportunity to expand their networks and engage in professional development. We’re excited to see the range of topics proposed by presenters for next year’s conference and look forward to delivering a stimulating event in 2021”.

HETS is a national event hosted by Midlands Innovation, a partnership of eight universities - Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham & Warwick, in partnership with the Science Council and the Technician Commitment.

HETS 2021 is scheduled to take place at the East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham on 23rd June, but may potentially move to an online conference depending on the COVID-19 situation at the time.
